Geology Olympics - provincial phase III: University of Alicante
For the third consecutive year, the University of Alicante held on 3 February the provincial phase of the Olympiad of geology.
The reception of this activity by secondary centres is growing, with 54 students enrolled, from 11 different secondary education centres in this Edition: IES La Assumpció (Elche); IES d. Figueras Pacheco (Alicante); IES Haygón (San Vicente del Raspeig); IES Mare Nostrum (Alicante); IES Azorín (PETRA); IES Biar (Biar); CD Santo Domingo (Orihuela); IES Miguel Hernández (Alicante); IES Nit de l'Albà (Elche); IES Thiar (Pilar de la Horadada) and IES o de Marzo (Alicante).
As in previous editions, the Olympics was divided into two distinct parts. In the first part, the students tested (theoretical and practical) have served to proclaim the four finalists representing Alicante at the National Olympics. In the second part, organized three workshops in which students could identify Microfossils (micropaleontology workshop), see the operation of the georádar (Geophysics workshop), and see different types of rocks to microscope (petrographic workshop).
The following quote from this Geological Olympics III will be the national phase, the next March 24, 2012 in the Palacio de la Magdalena in Santander. She will attend the four students winners in this provincial phase (three finalists and a second prize) where they will share the activity with students of all Spain. The winners of the National Edition will attend the Olympic International of Earth Sciences to be held in Argentina, next September or October.
